The notional ‘Twelfth Piece’ has no title. It stands, like a tomb for the Unknown Soldier, for all the fragments of the cylinder that were either lost or irredeemably shattered after the calamity. In the suite of compositions, the absent piece comprises the sound of the ‘silences’ on the restored cylinder. These inhabit the areas of infill, on which nothing was recorded, that the repairer had used to substitute for what was missing.
